Nov 2024 Budget, Spending, & Net Worth

What a roller coaster November was. With the election results and intense emotions I had to process afterward, it honestly feels like it was three months long. It is already hard to believe it has been less than a month of knowing who the next Prez is, and steeling myself for the awfulness to begin in earnest. This time around I'm going to try to avoid the news, though. Twitter is basically dead, and I've gone private and really thinking of deleting my account. That would also cut down on the amount of news I absorb accidentally.

In every other way, November felt like it was over in a flash. I was in Australia for the last week and a half of it for my PhD. Yay for food costs being covered by work!!

With my impending move (TBD), I took the opportunity to learn what it was like to live in a 1 bedroom apartment (with full kitchen) in a building with some great amenities: hot tub, heated indoor pool, and gym.

Oh man, was it ever bliss to live alone!! Part of that is because my new flatmate is annoying me. It is really pushing me towards getting a place by myself. I have been lulled into a sense of comfort from the past two iterations of flatmates being fantastic, and now that I have one that I do not really want to talk to at all, I want out.

I've also been looking at several complexes in Auckland that have good amenities. My current flat doesn't have ANY amenities. Surprisingly, while away, I didn't enjoy the hot tub as much as I thought I would - I mean, I can just take a bath if I want to lounge in hot water. The joy of a hot tub is sharing it with friends. As a solo person, the pool was a much bigger draw for me. So now I know I can include complexes that have a pool but not a hot tub in my favorites list. I plan on joining a gym with fun workout classes once my PhD thesis is submitted, so the apartment gym is not as important to me. I'm not big on weight machines, etc., but I would maybe use the treadmill or elliptical if it is available once in a while. The real issue is that I like saving too much - having a flatmate is likely the only way I can keep saving significant amounts, particularly because any new flat is going to cost a lot more than my current one because my landlord has tried to keep my rent affordable to keep me in the flat.

In other news, my boss and I have applied for funding for 0.7 FTE of my salary starting next March, which is when I should have my thesis submitted. We'll see if that funding shakes out, but I think I have a good chance, because the person who decides who gets funding urged my boss to apply specifically for me to stay in NZ. If it does eventuate, I'll be rolling in it, because the other 0.3 FTE will be covered by my current job, meaning I will earn a full salary for the first time in NZ since ...2012-ish? The total salary is over $100K NZD, which is approximately 3x what I've been making for many years now, and 2x what I currently make. In a future post, I will dare to dream of what such a budget would look like...

And, speaking of budgets, let's get to it:

November 2024 Budget

This was the first month since my PhD stipend officially ended and I only had my 0.5 FTE salary as income.

Income: $3,627.60

Salary: $3,054.08

Lending Crowd repayments: $257.92

Garage rent: $260

Overage from Oct: $55.60

Spending: $2,093.40 (57.7%)

Spending categories:

Rent: $1060 - my portion of rent is $265 per week.

Groceries: $396.98 ($500). Food was covered by work for the last week and a half of the month while I was in Australia.

Power + Internet: $224.06 - my share of two month's worth of bills

Eating out: $44.50 ($150)

Charity: $60 ($60)

Cell phone: $27 ($35) - top up

Medical: $0 ($100)

Misc: $230.86 ($485) -

alcohol, entertainment, self care, fees, gifts, travel: $0

goods and wants: $200.48 - fave snacks from US, Zagga investment (have to find a better category for this!), face masks, uniqlo sling bag, 2x uniqlo folding sunglasses (brilliant!)

transportation: $30.38 - 4x short e-scooter rides, 1x evenings of Mevo car hire

Nov 2024 Savings: $1500 (41%); $34.20 moved to income in Dec 2024.

Savings and Funds Activity Update

  • My third 1 year $5K CD has now matured, earning me $260.58 (minus taxes). I started a new $5K CD for 6 mo as that has the highest interest rate right now (5.2% p.a.). I'll just keep chasing the (kinda) high rates until I can finish my PhD and figure out how to invest instead of keeping tons of money in savings accounts.

  • The $1500 I saved from my income this month went to my $10K Medical Fund (see sidebar). Along with interest earned in my savings accounts and term deposit that matured this month, that fund is now at 99% complete. OOOH so close! Savings in future months will go towards finishing this off, a $1K New Smartphone Fund, a $2K New Laptop Fund, and a $5K Tax Advisor Hire Fund.

  • Now that Lending Crowd is a bust, I have also decided to start investing a small % of my $$ in Zagga, another peer-to-peer lending platform for real estate. The returns are ~9+% p.a. for a year or less. I now have two loans out:
    • $50 @ 9.85% (they say $1K is the minimum investment, but I tested making my first loan out at $50 and it went through OK????)
    • $1K @ 9%

Net Worth Tracking

NZ Savings: $123,309.19 NZD

Peer to peer lending:

  • LendingCrowd: $3,368.80 NZD - principal still owed, paid in weekly installments
  • Zagga: $1,050 NZD

Kiwisaver: $106,637.50 NZD

US investments: $59,711.39 USD

Total Net Worth (Nov 2024): $335,874.85 NZD (an increase of +$15,456.90 NZD)

Boo

All the boos re: the US election result. I feel ill.

I'm so sad and so worried for so many people.

I feel so ineffectual and useless. As I told my mom/sister, who share my sentiments, the only thing I can see there is to do is to be as kind as possible to as many people as possible, and to get prepared to help as many people as we can, because a lot more people are going to need a lot more help, very soon. I know a lot of folks are trying to find someone to blame and are all into people reaping what they sow right now. But hoping the people who voted for 45 (again) will get their comeuppance and reporting immigrants for ICE? I just can't get on board with that, it's a level too far. It goes against every fiber of my being to wish ill will on anyone (although I have wished that something would happen to 45 and people like Putin and Netanyahu to diminish their power). At the same time I empathize with everyone who feels hurt by the outcome of the election. They're working through their feelings just like I am. I guess I just wish that there were more pulling together and less blame-seeking? I dunno how I feel really.

All that said, the election effectively made the decision for what will likely happen after my PhD - I'll be staying in NZ if I can. I know it is selfish of me, but I don't see the use in moving back. As a very outspoken and long-term left winger/liberal (I'm still not sure what the difference is between those two terms?) who has made her position clear on social media for decades, being a childless single woman in her 40s (i.e. no chance of child bearing), AND an academic/research scientist, I'm prime right wing fodder for their cannons. I have no doubt they'll completely gut the government organisation that I have desperately wanted to work at in the US, so that dream is off of the table. Probably for good...

I think any form of cruelty and bad policy is possible with the incoming administration. If they make me choose, I'm choosing my NZ citizenship. I'm super grateful to even have this option. I've offered trans and gay friends an escape hatch via marriage to help fast track an NZ citizenship for them. I've been through this process once with a partner, so I kind of know what they're looking for. I'm sure we could pull it off. Anything to save someone from suffering.

Unfortunately my boss has decided to cut my hours starting next year - from 0.5 FTE to 0.3, starting July 2025. The project I manage can't afford my salary at 0.5 FTE anymore. Meanwhile, I can't survive on that amount of income, so I'm scrambling trying to find grants and other things to ensure I can afford food and rent, at the same time I'm trying to finish up papers and data processing for my PhD thesis. It's not great.

My sister went to the ER due to high blood sugar. She has diabetes but is in denial about it and eats a ton of sugar and carbs all of the time. I don't think she has had a vegetable in years. I'm pretty worried about her.

My dad went to the ER the week before that. Gosh, the hits keep coming. I don't know how my mom deals.

On the bright side, summer is pretty much here! I pulled out my fan and warm weather clothes from storage and put away most of my sweatpants and sweaters. Finally!

Also, it's strawberry season! They're sooooo good right now.

I hope you all can find and see the good things in life right now, as bleak as everything feels.

October 2024 Budget and Spending

I keep saying this, but it was another good month, and I expect things to change next month.

Income: $5,583.60

Salary: $4581.12

PhD stipend: $444.23 - the last of my stipend. RIP, getting paid to do my PhD research

Lending Crowd repayments: $215.33

Garage rent: $260

Overage from Sept: $82.92

Spending: $2,528 even (45.3%)

Spending categories:

Rent: $1060 - my portion of rent is $265 per week.

Groceries: $439.78 ($500). A bit under budget.

Power + Internet: $168.39 - I paid a higher % of the electricity and internet bill because my current flatmate wasn't living with me for the whole month.

Eating out: $68.62 ($150) - nicely under budget! I ate out at McDonalds 4x, got some banana bread for breakfast one morning (it was terrible - never go to shakey isles for banana bread!), and I bought a round of milkshakes for friends one evening.

Charity: $0 ($60)

Cell phone: $25 ($35) - top up

Medical: $0 ($100)

Misc: $716.21 ($485) -

entertainment, fees, gifts, travel: $0

alcohol - $40.78 - two drinks with coworkers in town for our annual meeting

self care: $287.36 - 2 massages, a haircut, a brow wax and tint, an eyelash tint, and a spa pedicure, most before my big annual meeting and presentation

goods and wants: $245.57 - a slide lock for my door (don't feel totally sure my flattie or one of his guests won't open the door), 32 GB of RAM and a 128 GB USB stick (I may be able to get this reimbursed next month)

transportation: $142.50 - 7x short e-scooter rides, 4x evenings of Mevo car hire

Oct 2024 Savings: $3000 (54.7%); $55.60 moved to income in Nov 2024.

I was able to save ~55% of my take-home income ($3K).

Other news

  • My second 1 year $10K CD has now matured, earning me $517.04 ($625 minus taxes). I started a new $10K CD for 6 mo as that has the highest interest rate right now (5.4% p.a.). I'll just keep chasing the high rates until I can finish my PhD and figure out how to invest instead of keeping tons of money in savings accounts.

  • I have also decided to start investing my $$ in Zagga, another peer-to-peer lending platform for real estate. The loans are minimum $1K, though, so spreading the risk by participating in a lot of loans (as I have in the past) is not really possible if I want to minimize the % of my money I invest in these more risky types of ventures.

  • The money from the CD and the money I saved in Oct went to my $10K Post-PhD Medical Fund. It's now ~81% complete (see sidebar).

Net Worth tracking

NZ Savings: $122,355.27 NZD

LendingCrowd: $3,641.14 NZD - principal still owed, paid in weekly installments

Kiwisaver: $104,052.19 NZD

US investments: $57,195.79 USD

Total Net Worth (Oct 2024): $320,417.95 NZD

Annual Work Review

I just had the easiest annual work review ever. I was really scared because it was with my boss's boss. He isn't scary, just an unknown entity to me. Last year my review was done by one of his underlings because he was super busy and I didn't qualify for one-on-one time with him, as a lowly part time worker. My status hasn't changed but he said he had more time this year to meet with everyone. They are required to meet with every employee once per year to discuss accomplishments, development opportunities, etc.

However, he really has absolutely no idea who I am or what I do exactly, and also has no control over my salary or tasks or workload. So we mainly just talked about his hobby writing music reviews and how great my boss is. My PhD is in progress and I'm working as hard as I can on it, staying up all night. It feels like 1 step forward, 2 back all of the time - I keep finding mistakes in what my advisor told me to do and having to re-do work.

Anyway, another annual review done! Whew!

Sept 2024 Budget Report

Another good month. However, things will change next month.

Income: $5,620.03

Salary: $3056.68

PhD stipend: $1269.24

Lending Crowd repayments: $619.11

Garage rent: $325

Entrust dividend: $350

Spending: $2537.11 (45.1%)

Spending categories:

Rent: $1390 - My flatmates left and I had to pay a whole week and a half's rent by myself. Ugh. Luckily I found someone but it wasn't ideal. I couldn't find a couple to move in so I had to settle for a single person paying less. Oh well.

Groceries: $568.39 ($500). A bit overbudget but that's ok.

Power + Internet: $0 ($150) - Didn't get the bill for September yet!

Eating out: $176.80 ($150) - Also overbudget but I tried Popeye's (meh, including the bisuits), got some Zambrero, got some BurgerFuel, and some McDonald's 3x.

Charity: $0 ($60)

Cell phone: $22 ($35) - top up

Medical: $61.20 ($100) - I got full body hives one day and the over the counter meds didn't treat them at all. I had to go to the doctor quickly to get stronger meds.

Misc: $268.72 ($485) -

alcohol, entertainment, travel: $0

self care: $61.80 - massage

fees: $10 - Wise debit card fees

gifts: $10.99 - dad's 75th birthday card

goods and wants: $31.78 - algae spray to treat patio and balcony tiles; face mask

transportation: $154.15 - 6x short e-scooter rides, 4x evenings of Mevo car hire

 Sept 2024 Savings: $3000 (53%); $82.92 moved to income in October 2024.

I was able to save ~53% of my take-home income ($3K), which is a great end to my high savings streak.

Other news

  • My PhD stipend has now ended, so my income going forward will be greatly reduced, unfortunately.

  • My first 1 year CD has now matured, earning me $517.04 ($625 minus taxes). I started a new $10K CD for 6 mo as that has the highest interest rate right now (5.8% p.a.). I'll just keep chasing the high rates until I can finish my PhD and figure out how to invest instead of keeping tons of money in savings accounts.

  • The money from the CD and the money I saved in Sept went to my $10K Post-PhD Medical Fund. It's now ~46% complete (see sidebar).

Future Moves

Whenever I'm sick of my PhD (which is always), I think about what I'm gonna do when it's over. All of the free time and fewer worries, what a luxury that will be! I have lots and lots of plans and dreams.

One of my main goals when I have free time is identify and take action on my main Rich Life focuses (foci?). No better time than now to figure out what those should be...

Financially, my biggest pain points (other than buying a house, which has been taken off of the table for the near future for many reasons) are:

  1. I'm pretty worried about the low value of my investments with respect to retirement. I've previously explained that I can't really legally invest without incurring wild tax bills and having to fill out complicated tax forms requiring hiring a tax accountant for thousands of dollars a year. But I do have a few options, one of which is to invest in non-dividend paying stocks in the US up to $50K NZD cost basis. I can invest about $30K NZD more before hitting that threshold, so I'll immediately concentrate on doing that. I have $60K in savings for a house down payment fund that is just sitting there with no real purpose or home. It's going to be annoying because of the NZD-USD conversion rate, but I guess I don't have much of a choice if I want to remove worries about my taxes.

  2. Sigh. Speaking of, I need to hire a tax accountant and financial planner to see what the damage is. I will probably have to pay tons of money to learn how I've screwed up my returns (both US and NZ) so far. Then I'll get advice about how to handle everything going forward, and likely have to pay fines and back taxes. Craigs NZ apparently offers US domiciled individual stocks to invest in within my Kiwisaver that will save me from having to pay an accountant large sums of money every year in the future. Saving up ~$5K to hire someone and make a decent dent in the fines is my next financial goal. This task - hiring a tax accountant and financial advisor - is probably the first thing I should do before making any big financial moves, including moving money to the US (described in #1).

  3. I need to update my will and trust documents based on the financial planner's advice. How do financials work across borders?! I have no idea, but I should really figure it out.

Outside of the financial realm, my biggest worries are around my health. I am currently saving up $10K to spend on medical expenses post-PhD. This could be used towards:

  • gym membership at a gym I actually look forward to going to
  • premium and specialty work out classes: tennis, pilates, SUP rentals, fun one-off classes for sports I've been meaning to try
  • trainer fees
  • dermatology appointments: mole checks and removals, create a skincare regimen
  • dentist appointments and surgeries (I may need this soon if my gums don't stop receding!)
  • medical appointments
  • psychiatry and psychology appointments to treat my ADHD
  • therapy
  • nutritionist hire
  • optometry appointments (check ups, new glasses, treatment for dry eyes and convergence insufficiency, LASIK to treat far-sightedness?)
  • mammogram (I've been putting it off! BAD)
  • nose job to fix sinus issues (and do some cosmetic stuff, why not)
  • shingles vax
  • physio appointments to treat my posture, back, ankle, shoulders, neck, etc.
  • medical insurance

Other than the medical and tax planner funds, I feel like I've saved up for all of my short- and medium-term goals. Once those are filled, any "extra" money can go towards investments or increasing my standard of living.

I've been thinking a lot and if anything, my quality of life has shrunk instead of inflated since moving to NZ. My income has decreased as costs of living have inflated, meaning I both earn less and can buy less with the income I do receive now as compared to 2008.

The key to lifestyle inflation, I think, is to do it very carefully and mindfully. What do I value most? Where would my money make the most difference to the enjoyment of my life?

In rough priority order, having these are important to me:

  1. my own large furnished bedroom in a spacious, sunny, quiet, peaceful, affordable home with outside/garden access, bonus if the bedroom has a window and the apartment has nice views and huge bonuses if the complex has a spa, outside pool, and tennis court
  2. easy, affordable access to car (Mevo, Cityhop)
  3. a gym membership w/ premium classes, bonus if it is a luxury gym with spa pool and outside pool
  4. access to full health check ups and appointments with doctors who listen and care
  5. access to healthy, delicious food (emphasize local, organic, unprocessed) and a satisfying meal rotation
  6. plenty of opportunities for social activities, art, music, and athletic classes and events with friends
  7. a place to dance with friends (NOT a club)
  8. the time and funds to travel - esp more frequent local trips (around NZ, Aus, South Pacific islands)
  9. ability to go hiking and spend time outside with friends - paddleboarding, beach
  10. a free "third place" to hang out: library? work out classes? park? museum? where could this be in NZ?
  11. satisfaction with my appearance and social attitude: wardrobe, hairstyle, makeup, posture, demeanor
  12. digital security: computer back ups, VPN, security, and media update - music, movies, tv. could get a firestick and/or projector?
  13. a comfortable home office: could upgrade my desk, chair, monitors
  14. up to date phone and laptop: I have funds to upgrade these post-PhD
  15. clean air: could get an air purifyer?
  16. a clean house: could hire a periodic deep cleaning maid service

I could probably think of more, but I think that's enough for now! I'm really looking forward to the opportunity to finally be able to do these things.

August 2024 Budget: What To Save For?!

Another bumper crop month for my income vs spend ratio! This will change by October (maybe even sooner) because my PhD stipend will cease. Last month to really sweep the savings in!

Income: $4848.30

Salary: $3032.20

PhD stipend: $1269.24

Lending Crowd repayments: $286.86

Garage rent: $260

Spending: $2180.80 (45%)

Spending categories:

Rent: $1125 - It was a month with 5 Fridays (rent day).

Groceries: $372.94 - I harvested a lot of previously-cooked food from my freezer this month, saving on my grocery bill.

Power + Internet: $245.18 - Last month's bill came in late, meaning that I paid my portion of TWO bills in one month.

Eating out: $113.99 - I'm very much holed up at home and haven't gotten out much, and have been eating down my freezer. In addition, I have cheated a tiny bit on this number. Uber Eats actually charges to my US credit card, and I still have money in my US bank account from my last trip home, so some of my eating out costs don't ever even come out of my NZ bank account. I'm kind of spending money from my past, NZD that was saved in previous years, pulled out of the NZ ecosystem for my last US trip, and is now being spent.

Charity: $50 - three tickets for the CoastGuard charity lotto. Crossed fingers for that $100K!

Cell phone: $14 - top up

Medical: $30 - prescription fees

Misc: $229.69 -

alcohol, entertainment, gifts, travel: $0

self care: $56.38 - haircut

fees: $51.60 - TradeMe fees

goods and wants: $36 - Kmart bamboo socks, undies, two USB port NZ plug

transportation: $85.71 - 4x short e-scooter rides, 1 evening of Mevo car hire

August 2024 Savings: $2667.50 (55%)

I was able to save 55% of my take-home income, which is awesome, and continues my good streak.

About $1100 went to filling out my $5.2K Bond and Rent Fund for when I have to move.

And the rest, nearly $1500?

Ah, this is the kicker. I keep running into the same issue, over and over and over again: I have no good place to put money I do not spend. Now that my big house buying goal is off of the table and I have saved for every single short-term and medium-term goal and item I want/need/can think of, plus every major travel or life change I can foresee coming down the pipeline, I just keep having to make up funds and goals to save up for to maintain motivation and the feeling of accomplishment that drives me financially.

I keep just shoving my unspent funds into my high yield savings accounts and CDs ("term deposits" in NZ), earning > 4% p.a.

Nearly $115K in savings is ridiculous. I desperately, desperately want to invest this money.

However, I am thwarted by extremely stupid and nationalistic tax laws in NZ and the US. They each are overly punishing to residents that invest in index funds in other countries. I cannot invest NZD without major tax preparation bills, and I cannot invest in US due to the NZ tax issues AS WELL AS the terrible currency conversion. Where in the HECK does this leave me?!

The most forgiving way, taxalogically,* to invest is to buy a house. But of course, that option is off of the table for me. Post-PhD, my first order of business is figuring out a better way. For now, I'll just keep shoving it into savings and keeping track of my Net Worth:

NZ Savings: $114,918.44 NZD

LendingCrowd: $4410.11 NZD - principal still owed, paid in weekly installments

Kiwisaver: $98,530.25 NZD - didn't break $100K, drats! Maybe next month...

US investments: $55,517.64 USD

Total Net Worth (Aug 2024): $311,128.44 NZD

Rejected

Dang! The credit card companies have become extremely strict as of late. Despite my EXCELLENT credit scores and very clean credit reports in BOTH NZ and the US, I really cannot catch a break.

My two white whales are the fee-free AMEX in NZ and the Alaska Airlines credit card in the US. I've applied for both a few times now over the past several years, and they keep denying me, no matter my income or how much I call and appeal.

There are very good reasons I want these cards:

1. I'd really like a cc that offers points for normal spending in NZ. The AMEX in NZ offers the best airpoints returns for zero annual fees, at 1 AirNZ point per $100 spent. My current ANZ airpoints card charges a $150 annual fee for a terrible return on spending - 1 AirNZ point per $110 spent. I cannot get rid of this card until I use up the airpoints, because the airpoints I've spent the past ~decade accruing will be wiped if I close the card beforehand. So I wait...

2. The Alaska Air credit card would fulfill the last piece of my post-PhD travel masterpiece. You can use Alaska Air points on Iceland Air because they code-share. They also offer a nice companion fare so my friend could conceivably save some money.

In NZ, my income is just not good enough for these companies. It doesn't matter that I pay off my credit card every month or that my cost of living is very low (e.g. I've spent less than half my income the past few months!). They do not consider me a good risk.

In the US, Alaska Air (managed by Bank of America) keeps flagging me and saying that I am not who I am - last year I even went INTO THE BANK with all of my IDs to prove who I am and they still rejected my application. I'm so confused, esp because I have been a customer of Bank of America since I was old enough to open my own bank account!! That's DECADES of being their customer! There isn't much more I can do there, but I WILL try, ONE MORE TIME, before I actually do the travel I'm planning.

In the meantime, I think I may have good news from JetBlue, who have also given me trouble in the past. I may have just gotten approved for my new cc? The signs (i.e., my credit monitoring services) point to yay!

Travel CC Planning

Just a place where I can track my credit card applications and airmile balances...Last updated Sept 2025

Current goal: accrue points/miles for annual US - NZ trips, and 2026 Islands + Iceland trip.

Note: To those wondering if all this churning affects my credit rating, my CreditKarma consistently rates my scores are >800. I've only ever gotten turned down by Chase, once, and just after they instituted the 5/24 rule* without my knowing about it. (*opening 5 cc's in a 24 month period) Barclaycard also seems to have a strict threshold, but I cannot tell what it is - I suspect it is 5/36 or 2/24? I keep getting turned down for their cc's - not until I had only opened 1 card in the past 24 months did they approve a JetBlue card, and I had to send in a TON of proof of identity, multiple times, to do so.

I have $336 in Delta eCredits that needs to be used up by Oct 2025! Use this trick.

5/24 US Credit Card Record: cc's opened in the last 24 months. Needs to be 4 or fewer to apply for new cc's. 2 year status: bold, underlined opened within last 2 years; BLUE indicates open cards

    1. Jetblue Plus. applied 28 July 2024. 50K points for $1K spend in 3 months. $99 annual fee. Aug 30 2024: My credit monitors are all saying something has changed with my credit score and that I have one new account, so maybe I got approved?! My mom hasn't said anything about a new card arriving, but I'll check this weekend. 2024 7 October: Finally officially approved! I had to send scans of my ID, bank statement, and social security card three times by mail and call 4x before they finally approved it (via the Hawaiian airlines call center??). Very weird process, but it's finally approved. :) I suspect I was rejected for the Alaska cards I applied for in the past (also handled by Barclay's) due to the number of 5/24 slots I had open? Need to charge $1K by Jan 1 2025. Miles awarded 24 Dec 2024.  Need to cancel by Sept 2025. Autocharges TMobile, Countdown. Sent cancellation notice on 5 September 2025. CANCELLED 5 September 2025. Falls off of list Sept 2026.

    2. Alaska Air Visa Signature. Applied 14 Mar 2025. Instantly approved. 70K miles for $3K min spend in 3 months. $95 annual fee. Points rec'd June 2025. Nightmare to work with BoA - avoid in the future. Need to cancel by Feb 2026. CANCELLED 5 September 2025. Falls off of list March 2027.

    3. Capital One Venture Rewards. Applied 23 July 2025. Instantly approved. Card received by 1 August 2025. 75K miles for $4K spend in 3 months. $95 annual fee. I applied for this card because I want to start building longer credit on more cards and I like Capital One. The points also transfer to many of my expiring mileage programs (BA, Qantas). I intend on getting the miles, then downgrading this card to the free VentureOne Rewards version, and keeping that card for a long while. To Keep - need to downgrade by June 2026; do not cancel. Falls off of list August 2027.

    4. Southwest Rapid Rewards Plus. Applied 23 July 2025. Instantly approved. Card received by 1 August 2025. 40K miles for $1K spend in 3 months. $69 annual fee. I applied for this card to reach my stretch travel goals - specifically, I can use them for inter-island flights in Hawai'i. Need to cancel by June 2026. Falls off of list August 2027.

    5. Open slot - for post-defense PhD travel. Ideally it will be a cc with big bonuses and maybe excellent travel insurance - a card on which to charge the expenses I incur during travel, which will also go towards the minimum spend. Need to do some research. Maybe Sapphire again?

    1. Capital One Miles: opened Mar 25, 2008; keep for credit report longevity score. I use this card to charge most of my transportation costs: Uber, UberEats, and Lime auto-charges this card as a back-up payment method.
    2. Chase Freedom: Dec 11, 2005; keep for credit report longevity score. My gym charges to this card for add-on specialty workout classes, and Amazon auto-charges to this card.
    3. Capital One Venture Rewards. Opened July 2025. Downgrade in 2026 and keep long-term.
    4. Southwest Rapid Rewards Plus. Opened July 2025.

  1. ANZ bank Airpoints Visa Platinum: $150/year annual fee. Eligible for bonus after 1 year of not having a card open with them. Heart Foundation and Coastguard NZ auto-charge this card. Keeping this card for the good travel + medical insurance.

Current Airpoints:

*Airmiles and points are usually worth between 0.009 to 0.02 (0.9 to 2 cents) each, so any points are ideally used when the normal cost of the flight divided by the # of points needed to redeem a flight work out to more than those numbers. E.g., my usual return flight to the US on United is typically ~$3000 or 80k points, giving a point value of $3,000/80,000 = 0.0375, or 3.75 cents each. This is a good test for deciding decide whether to pay for a flight or use miles.

United: 257,456 (never expire)

Delta: 43,314 (never expire)

Air NZ: 959.86 (never expire)

Hawaiian Airlines: 130,094 (never expire)

Southwest Airlines: 42,677 (never expire)

JetBlue: 58,353 (never expire)

Alaska Air: 73,305 (never expire)

American: 181,633 (exp Nov 2026)

Qantas: 34,483 (expire June 2026). Book AirBnB via Qantas site to earn points/renew expiry date. Or convert points from Capital One or buy 1,000 points for ~$56 AUD. Cheapest/easiest way is to buy a $10 gift card to Kobo. Currently I can get a round trip ticket to Christchurch, Wellington using 16K points, or Queenstown for $40 NZD using up 24K points (it doesn't give good value for the points!).

Singapore Krisflyer: 49,800 (expire June 2026 - MUST USE OR LOSE by booking a flight.)

British Airways: 162,434 Avios (exp Dec 2027; 36 months from activity; can convert points via Capital One)

ALL ABOUT TRAVEL INSURANCE

In terms of credit cards, the Chase Sapphire Reserve apparently offers the "best" travel and medical insurance for trips? But maybe not because apparently there are major exclusions and also only $2500 worth of coverage? I will likely need a separate medical travel insurance policy for most trips anyways. (More about travel insurance: one, two, three). Blue Geo. It looks like my ANZ airpoints card has unlimited medical insurance and travel coverage up to 90 days of travel, with a $200 deductible. NZ citizens have reciprocal medical agreements with UK and Australia, so no travel insurance is needed when traveling to those countries.

TRAVEL GAME PLAN (2025 - 26)

Upcoming Travel:

--NZ Summer/Fall 2026 Celebratory Post-Hand In, Pre-Defense Trip (Northland NZ + Rarotonga -- use Qantas + Air NZ points)

--Sept 2026 Post-PhD Trip to: Island (Hawai'i) + Iceland + London + France Trip

CC application plan:

2025

2025 update: Opened Southwest and Cap One Venture cc's in July 2025.

FlyerTalk Forum

To accrue a diverse array of useful points, esp ones with companion fares, here are my top options for cc's to apply for in 2025 and beyond, in preparation for future travel:

Some options:

  1. United Explorer Mileage Plus Explorer: Applied 25 May 2022, supposedly pre-approved by Chase, but they gave me a "we need more time to process your request" notice when I applied. 60K miles for $3K spend in first 3 months. No annual fee first year, $95 thereafter. Denied 26 May 2022 due to "Too many requests for credit or opened accounts with us." (I only have 1 cc from Chase right now). Need to wait 30 days then apply again, as I applied for the Chase Sapphire on 22 May and got denied due to it not being 48 months since I rec'd my last CS bonus.
  2. United Club Infinite card: $5K spend for 100K points. $525 annual fee. United Club membership to lounges. Two free passes to lounges. $100 statement credit for TSA PreCheck fees (mine expires in 2024). 1st and 2nd bags free. Good card to get before traveling.
  3. United Quest card: $4K spending for 70K points. $250 annual fee. Preapproved through my United account. 1st and 2nd bags free. Good card to get before traveling.
  4. American Express Gold card: 75K membership rewards points targeted offer (normally 60K points; need to go through pre-approval process) for $4K spend in 6 months (not three months as usual). $250 annual fee. These can be converted to Delta (1:1); Avios (450:250 ratio); Singapore KrisFlyer miles (450:250 ratio), Qantas miles (450:250 ratio).
  5. Chase Sapphire Preferred: 80K points for $4K spend in 3 mo. $95 annual fee. Eligible again: ~Sept 2022. Need to wait 48 months after meeting award spending to apply again. Denied in May 2022. Can try again after 30 days.
  6. Citi Premier card: 60K points for $600 in gift cards or travel rewards for a $4K spend in first 3 months.

2026 plan: My PhD submission will take place in 2025, and then I have a year-long post-doc that ends in Sept 2026. Then - I'm free to do what I want with no job obligations!

I want to take a sabbatical from my job/life. I want to go to the islands! Cook Islands, Rarotonga, Samoa, Bali, Tahiti, wherever! Just serious R&R. I am happiest in a tropical setting, in a shaded lounger with an ocean to play in in front of me, a warm breeze and hot sunshine, drinks in hand, fresh, healthy food on the menu, with hikes and other activities to beautiful/interesting places available, and plenty of free time to do it all in. Potential itinerary: Auckland --> Rarotonga <--> Aitutaki --> Auckland (or sub in Niue, Samoa, or New Caledonia for the destination). I should have enough AirNZ miles (and saved up travel funds of $5K) to cover a very nice, relaxing trip.

Post post-doc, it is time for serious travel. Islands + Iceland & Europe top my bucket list, but since I'm getting older, the idea of doing a big Europe backpacking trip (or any trip) alone is getting less and less appealing. If I can find someone to do it with me, I'd now want to do it in semi-luxury. Meaning: more expensive. I'd want to get a private room in a quiet hostel now, take the first-class, private bunks on the train, travel slowly, etc. rather than save a few bucks by bunking with a dozen 20-somethings and sleeping upright clutching my belongings. For Iceland, I'd want similar, but a big driving tour with a rugged vehicle to get to out of the way places, or maybe even a Winnebago campavan thing. I'd even consider taking a trip with a tour group now (actually maybe not, that sounds awful!).

Alternately, if the US has recovered from covid, I'd love to do a big driving tour of North America--USA, Canada, Mexico, as well as other places in Central America.

I have saved up $5K for a local-to-NZ trip to Raro and $13K NZD for a big trip post-PhD and post-post-doc. Current ideas are to do an island tour: Hawai'i, rest & move back to the US, stay with my parents for a respite and to apply for jobs, then head over to Iceland for 3 weeks or so before coming back to NZ and looking for a new job. All I want to do is have a few adventures and rest my weary brain and body after a grueling PhD and post-doc before having to get back on the treadmill again.

*2023 update: friend I banked all of the airpoints for is pregnant, so I need to find another use for those, and another travel companion. She is the perfect travel partner so I'm a bit disappointed I won't get to celebrate the end of my PhD with her and travel together again in the near future.

Potential Islands + Iceland Itinerary:

Auckland --> Honolulu --> Maui --> Hilo --> Kauai --> Honolulu --> Mainland (Home Base USA) <--> see friends in Boston/DC --> Boston/NYC/NJ/DC airport --> Iceland <--> London --> France --> London --> Mainland (Home Base USA)

Details:

I can fly to Hawaii from Auckland using 40K Hawaiian miles, and then use my Hawaiian or Southwest miles to fly around the islands. Each flight will cost 7.5K Hawaiian airmiles or 4556 southwest miles, and there are four flights (30K HI miles; 18,224 Southwest, each).

*I'd like to pay for my friend's flights using miles as much as possible, as she is just as skint as me, and it will be vastly more fun if she comes! If she is able to get to a West Coast US hub from her home in Canada, I can also use my airmiles to get her to/from Honolulu, either from Seattle, San Fran, or LA, using ~35K Hawaiian miles.

To get myself back to my parents' house on the East Coast from HNL, I cannot use Hawaiian or Southwest miles, as these airlines do not fly near my hometown.

I'll stay a while in my hometown. Accrue and use some JetBlue miles to see East Coast friends in Boston, New Jersey, Rhode Island, and DC.

After visiting my friend in Boston, I can fly directly from there to Iceland on Iceland Air. I can use 30K Alaska Air miles for Iceland air flights: https://www.icelandair.com/frequent-flyer/benefits/redeem-points/. (This is why I need to get the Alaska Airlines cc). I could also use Singapore miles, again hopefully having enough to again fly a friend over with me. I want to thoroughly explore so I am hoping to do a 10-14 day trip around.

I have a friend in London and he has been begging me and another friend to visit him, and British Airways allows a free stopover in London. Stopovers can be as long as I'd like, which is perfect. I'll stay in London at his place for a few days to a week. I'm also sure I can use his place as a home base if I end up flying around Europe! Paris, Madrid, Rome, or Berlin, anyone? Maybe I will go visit my Dad's side of the family to finally meet them! So, I will likely take one airline to Iceland and one airline back to DC or New Jersey / NYC. Try https://www.seatspy.com/ Seat Spy to find BA reward seats.

Then I'll fly back home using American, JetBlue, Delta, or United...one of the US airlines. Shouldn't be too expensive or cost too many points, almost everywhere on the East Coast is easy to fly to/from.

Itinerary:

Home --> Boston

Boston   --IcelandAir-->   KEF

KEF --BritishAir-->   London

London <--?train?--> France

London --BritishAir-->   NYC/DC

NYC/DC -->   Home

Then, after that grand adventure, I hope I will be starting to be refreshed after my hellish, Trumpish pandemic PhD. I'll start looking for jobs at that point, and spend my time taking fun courses to upskill, get in shape again, helping out my family, and volunteering. I particularly want to learn how to draw/paint/watercolor, code, use Adobe software, GIS, increase my Spanish fluency, take a ToastMasters course, and take a ton of fun dance/stretch/workout classes, as well as dive into therapy more. Crossed fingers a good, well paying, flexible job comes up in NZ sometime thereafter!

NEEDS FOR THE ABOVE PLANS:

Current goal: accrue points for US trips, 2026 South Pacific islands travel, and 2026 Hawaii + Iceland trip. Need to do a cost-point analysis for all flights/points schemes - maybe through Miles and More and/or Point.Me, however, it looks like I still need:

Southwest: 42,677 - DONE but apply for more cc's for stretch goals

  • ~22K for inter-island Hawai'i flights: DONE

  • *Stretch goal: 22K more for friend's interisland flights
  • *Extra stretch goal: need 47K more for friend's flight to/from SFO or LAX

Singapore Krisflyer: 57K - DONE but can apply for more cc's if these are lowest miles spend

  • 17.5K miles to fly HNL --> Hometown US DONE
  • 27.5K miles to fly Hometown US --> Iceland via EWR DONE
  • Also look at Singapore air points, 19.5K for a West Coast --> HI flight. DONE
  • Convert other Chase/Citi/AMEX/Capital One points to Krisflyer points if these are the lowest miles spend available.
  • Here is how to find award flights on Singapore Air. Link 2.

  • can convert Capital One points to Avios at a 1:1 ratio.
  • *Look into converting Capital One Venture points to BA Avios to cover West Coast --> Hawaii flights for friend. Reportedly 13K miles for flights instead of 35K Hawaiian miles. DONE

  • cc to apply for: British Airways Visa Signature card. 100K points for $5K spend in 3 months. $95 annual fee. 10% BA flights booked through specific website link. $100 statement credit for flight to London. HawaiianMiles: 130,094 - DONE but can apply for more cc's

  • 40K miles to fly from Auckland to Honolulu: DONE

  • JetBlue Plus card: 60K points for $1K spend in 3 mo. $99 annual fee.
  • JetBlue Business card: 80K points for $2K spend in 3 mo. $99 annual fee.

Manufactured Spending Tips:

Can buy VISA gift cards at Staples to meet min spend, get 5X points, and liquidate via Walmart BillPay). Here are other tips for applying. Could also loan $$ to Kiva and pull out cash after 1 round.  Also plan to charge work expenses to the card and get reimbursed. Here is the full guide to Manufactured Spending.

****************************************************
Since Chase has some god-awful new rule about opening more than 5 credit cards every 2 years, plus you now have to wait 48 months between bonus awards for cards in the Chase Sapphire family in order to qualify again. I have to be much more careful now. I need to figure out how many I've applied for and keep track of my cc apps:

CREDIT CARD HISTORY AND TRACKING LOG

2025

US

  1. Need to cancel by June 2026.

NZ

2024

US

I didn't apply for any cc's in 2024. Removed from 5/24 cc list:

  1. British Airways Visa Signature card approved 7 Dec 2022. 75K points for $5K spend in 3 months. $95 annual fee. Spend to be applied to Nov US trip for family wedding for 3 people. (Was DENIED Alaska Air card (50K points for $2K spend, $75 annual fee) on Dec 6 2022.) Points awarded on Feb 17 2023. Need to cancel by end Nov 2024. CLOSED 19 June 2023. Remove from list Dec 2024.

NZ

Applied and received:

  1. Westpac no fee, no foreign fee cc. APPLIED 5 SEPT 2024 (for $500 worth of credit). Conditionally approved. Final approved 10 Oct 2014 for $3K, had to bring in my ID and documents twice. Received 23 Oct 2024.
  2. Wise Debit card 5 SEPT 2024. Have both physical and digital debit cards - need to add to Google pay to use digital version.

Applied and rejected:

  • AMEX no fee cc. It offers 1 Air NZ airpoint per $100 spent, with a bonus 50 airpoints with a $750 spend in the first 3 months. APPLIED 24 AUG 2024. REJECTED 30 AUG 2024. They do not include my stipend or any other 'non-payslip' income in my total income, and plus I probably have too much credit available in the above two credit cards, so therefore I was rejected. I give up on this for now. I will use my ANZ airpoints and then close that credit card - I do not want to pay for the annual fee any longer.

2023

US - no cc's applied for

NZ

Applied and received:

  • SBS no fee cc. No fee, and cashback @ $1 per $150 spent. APPLIED 29 JULY 2023, got conditional approval. Received card after a lot of rigmarole sending bank statements and rental leases etc in Sept 2023 for $3.5K limit.

    Applied and rejected:
  • AMEX no fee cc. It offers 1 Air NZ airpoint per $100 spent, with a bonus 50 airpoints with a $750 spend in the first 3 months. This is a BETTER RATE than the cc I currently have, which offers 1 Air NZ airpoint per $110 spent!! and the fee is $150/year. Why? APPLIED 29 JULY 2023, should find out if I'm approved in 5-10 biz days. Verdict: rejected. Need to apply again after getting rid of high limit ANZ card.

    2022

    US

    1.  Capital One Venture Miles Rewards: applied 26 May 2022. 75K points for $4K min spend in 3 mo. $95 annual fee. Can convert points to miles (Avios, Qantas). APPROVED 26 May 2022. Need to cancel by end April 2023. Remove from list June 2024.  [Applied for Chase Sapphire (22 May 2022; denied - not 48 mo since last bonus awarded) and then Chase United Explorer (25 May 2022; denied - applied for too many cards too close in a row). So applied for this card on 26 May 2022]
    2. Applied Alaska Air cc, 50K points for $2K spend, $75 annual fee. applied 5 Dec 2022. denied.
    3. British Airways Visa Signature card approved 7 Dec 2022. 100K points for $5K spend in 3 months. $95 annual fee. Spend to be applied to Nov US trip for family wedding for 3 people. (Was DENIED Alaska Air card (50K points for $2K spend, $75 annual fee) on Dec 6 2022.) Need to cancel by end Nov 2024. Remove from list Dec 2024. CLOSED June 19 2023 by accident.
    4. Alaska Airlines Visa Signature card applied & APPROVED 30 Sept 2023. 60K points for $3K spend in first 3 months (by end 2023). $95 annual fee. Need to cancel by end Aug 2024. NOPE - they closed my card due to "fraud" ??? V. odd.
    5. JetBlue Plus card awaiting approval 30 Sept 2023. 40K points for $1K spend in first 3 months. $99 annual fee. They also needed me to verify my identity but I got the letter requesting IDs too late and they closed my application. Oh well.

    2021 goals

The only travel for this year will be (at most) to the US to see my family. I will need to secure a place in MIQ before I can do that, though. I am trying to finish up my PhD and hand in my thesis mid-2023.

    1. Book US travel (flights to US done (but keep getting cancelled, flights back to NZ not done)
    2. Book MIQ isolation hotel for 2 weeks after return to NZ. NO LONGER NEEDED

    4. Cancel Southwest card before April 2021. DONE. Cancelled 11 Mar 2021.

    2020 Goals:
Use United points built up during 2019 spending. I'll apply for maybe a BA card or something to get me around Iceland and Europe, as I plan to do a big trip before moving back to the US in 2023. Assuming the world hasn't ended by then...

--US work trip to Arizona, tack on 1 week trip home afterward. Will need to use airmiles to get from AZ to East Coast and from East Coast to the West Coast (work will pay for me to a) get to AZ and b) get from the West Coast to NZ). canceled due to COVID

--Try to cancel AMEX card--ask for them to match this offer: 200 airpoints for sign on bonus ($195 annual fee, need to cancel card and wait 2 years to be eligible for sign on bonus).

--Accrue airmiles for a 2024 trip to Iceland/Europe. I have a lot of options for which cards to apply for:
      1. Southwest (40K points for $1K spend),

    2019

    US

    1. Chase Ink Business Preferred. 80K points for $5K spending in 3 months. 23 July = app date. 29 July = account added to online accounts. June 29 2020 = award miles added to United account.

    2019 Goals:

    1. Use 80K United points for 2019 US trip. Update: 40K was used for 2019; there were no award flights in March for 3 +/- weeks around my ideal travel date in Sept, so I bit the bullet and paid $1K NZD for my ideal return flight, rather than 1. cut my US trip and time with my parents short or 2. have to ask for 2 months off of work for the second year in a row.
    2. Downgrade Chase Sapphire Reserve or cancel by May 2019 to avoid the annual fee ($450 annual fee). Update: no--use $300 travel credit in June, THEN xfer air points and cancel card. Update 2: Card is cancelled as of June 2019, after using up the $300 travel credit.
    3. Check all airmiles statuses and re-up in June and November. For Hawaiian, either buy 500 miles or make sure I do an online survey to renew the date, or do a survey when in the US.
    4. Wipe sister's fraud off of my 3 credit reports. Sister opened card and added me as authorized user August 2018. In the process of removing this from my credit reports as this counts as an opened account and counts against my Chase 5/24 limit. Feb 9 2019: my credit reports are now clean of this record.
    5. In mid-July 2019: applied for Chase Ink Business preferred for 80K points for 5K spending in 3 months. Applied 23 July, account added online by 29 July. Earned 85K points on 22 Sept 2019.

    2018

    1. I applied for a card at Barclay Elite Mastercard AAdvantage that gives 60K points with first purchase and $95 annual fee on 3 December 2017. UPDATE 19 Dec: they asked for proof of address; I sent that in; should be approved within 30 days. Called and got approved 16 January 2018. Points awarded Feb 2018. to cancel after July 2018 credit card app. Sent notice of closure message on 5 August 2018.

    2. On 30 May 2018, I applied for chase Sapphire reserve that gives 50K airmiles for $4K spend in 3 months; $300 travel credit; $100 towards Global Entry app; $450 annual fee. Will use for LASIK charge of $5800 NZD to meet min spend. Approved 5-7 June; activated card 22 June. Met spending requirement $4K with LASIK. Eligible for Chase Sapphire again: ~August 2022.

    3. On 25 Sept 2018, I applied for an Old Navy/Gap/Banana Republic card to save $300 on a shop. This was not the plan and out of the ordinary--my dad has leukemia and I think I was slightly out of it when I agreed--I definitely forgot about my CC Plan and the 5/24 rule. Old Navy/Gap/Banana Republic opened 25 Sept 2018.
