January Goals
Well, January is almost over, but I still want to accomplish a few things:
2016 Goals
Oh my God. While I met many of my goals, 2015 was an epic FAIL for me in terms of happiness. I got too busy with the PhD and way too concerned about meeting impossible deadlines. My happiness plummeted.
My main goal in 2015 was to sleep 8 hours every night. That really, really didn't happen. I made an effort to sleep in more to try to meet that 8 hour goal when I could, but in no way, shape, or form did I get sleep like a normal person. And I think that is what I meant for myself when I set that goal.
After reading a ton of books about habits, I realized that I have to find my Keystone habit: the small change that cascades into bigger changes. I don't know what it could be, but I do know that I'll have to do it EVERY DAY in order for it to affect my lifestyle in a significant way. I'll try various ideas and see what sticks.
Ideas for keystone habit:

Ideas for keystone habit:
- 15 minutes organisational/plan/review specific goals every day--make daily, weekly, and monthly goal lists to review during this time.

2016 Budget and Financial Goals
First up in my 2016 goal-setting (because this is a PF-lite blog, but a PF blog nonetheless): financial goals and yearly budget.
Yearly Budget
My faithful garage renter is moving away soon. If I find another renter immediately, I can count on this income and can live on the second budget listed below (revised according to 2015 spending and budget). If I don't find one, I'll have to live by the first budget:
Budget 1: With no garage rent income: $34,361.60 ($2,863.47/mo):
Budget 2: With full garage rent income at $60 pw: $37,481.64
I also have several very do-able financial goals for 2016. I know they are do-able because they are basically the same as the past few years, and I've been able to do them with no problem in the past!

2015 Spending Review
Diving right in:
Income
I made $11,681.80 from my part-time PhD last year. Given how much I worked on it, I don't even want to calculate my hourly wage!! At least this income is tax-free.
I made $19,053.49 from my part-time job in 2015. Ditto...
Garage rent garnered me $3,000.
This totals $33,735.29 in income for 2015.
Spending
I spent $32,194.53 (according to my tracking). This does not include spending I did during my travels or trips home. I have yet to figure out a good way to track that, with all of the currency conversions and money transferred, etc.
Biggest surprise here is groceries. Under budget, whaaaat?
2015 Net Worth
Net worth in 2015 went up since detailed monthly tracking began (December 2014):
I have sporadic NW data since 2010:
2016 Goals
I was under budget in most categories in 2015, and managed to reach my saving goals. In 2016, I want to do the same. Additionally, I want to figure out a way to track my vacation spending. I also want to make an effort to spend all of my health budget--that is once again a priority this year (so she says).
In 2016, my income from my PhD and job should total $34,361.60. If I can get my garage rented the whole year, I will make $3,380 more. I'll do a yearly budget with and without that extra income.

December 2015--Let's finish this up!
This is just for the portion of the month (til 20 Dec) that I was in NZ:
Just work and a lot of car rentals (paid out of pocket but it was partly for work).
It really doesn't do any good to do any sort of analysis on this, as I was underbudget in NZ but my spending in the US eats up the rest of the budget (tracked under vacation spending, elsewhere). I always go into spending mode in the US, though this time I didn't go crazy--just got stuff I'd normally stock up on later this year during my visit.
Anyway. Next post is the 2015 year review!

Finishing Up 2015
Just a few more posts and I'll let the door hit 2015 on its way out. About time.
Planned posts:
(That reminds me, I need to back up my blog...)
And I need to remember to contribute what I saved last year as a lump sum to my Kiwisaver. The market is crap right now but I'm looking at it as a sale on stocks. ;)
Hope to get this all written and scheduled today while I'm on my deathbed with a cold. It's so nice and sunny out and all I can do is sneeze, cough, and drip. Gah.
Planned posts:
- 2016 Goals
- December 2015's budget round up
- Review 2015 spending as a whole. It'll be tricky because my Excel file where I detail my budget got corrupted between quarterly back ups and I'm missing several key months in there (April and May, specifically). I could go back through my credit card and debit records and fill it in, but...yeah, I'm not gonna do that. I can rely on my blog's monthly round up for an accurate picture of each category, luckily. Blogging FTW!

2015 Goal Review
Got a lot of 2015 goals done; didn't get some done. But 2016 is a new year! 2015 goals are listed at the bottom of this email and here for reference.
First: How did I do?
Main Goal
My main goal was to get at least 8 hours of sleep each night. I give myself a C on this. While I got a lot of sleep, I don't like how I got that sleep. I sometimes sacrificed work and other important things in order to get that 8+ hours. What I'd have liked to have done is play on my laptop a lot less in the evenings instead of sacrificing morning priorities.
Let's face it: I need to be less of a night owl in 2016.
Stretch Goals
Financial
I knocked my financial priorities out of the park, again. A++ I am really good at money goals. In 2016, I need to keep doing what I'm doing. And get renter's insurance.
Travel/Experiences/Social
Yeah, I did meh on these. A on travel, C in social, C in experiences. In 2016, I want MORE. These are what keep me happy and going, and I need to make a better effort to enjoy my life. It goes by so fast!
Learning/Projects
Eh, the PhD kept my brain busy. C- Need to do better in 2016. Maybe pick only a few to focus on. Astronomy. Spanish. Public speaking. Photography. Baton. Ancestry.
Career
Again, I am hitting my goals here. My CV keeps getting fatter. I would like to get more experience in a few more areas in 2016, though.
Medical/Physical/Mental Health
OK. I'm giving myself a solid F here. I fell apart in 2015, and completely gave up. I really need to make this a priority in 2016. Or else I'm afraid of what may happen.
Other
These were total bonus activities. I did most of them. B+

- Learn to speed read. Turns out this is not a real thing, at least when you need to read for comprehension. So--instead of speed reading, I just need to read faster. How?? ...I'm still figuring that part out. All the tips I hear are about speed reading, not reading faster while you still subvocalize (and therefore comprehend more). ETA: Here. and Here (ignore Bill Cosby reference).
Take a German class. (OR: complete free online Duolingo and Memrise courses!)- Learn how to identify at least 5 constellations/heavenly bodies in each hemisphere. This site is neat for that. Went to Stardome June 2015, learned how to find south using the Southern Cross (use pointer stars). Finding the RIGHT Southern Cross is another story. :) Also learned that you can only see Jupiter, Saturn, Mars, and Venus with the naked eye--no other planets, and the planets sometimes 'set,' meaning, for example, Jupiter is about to go away, beyond the horizon, and won't be visible for about 6 months. Mars is currently not visible. Orion is hidden from our view right now, too. The Scorpion is visible in the Milky Way, however.
