Post PhD Relaxation: An Islands + Iceland Trip

I have no idea when my PhD will be over (oh God), but I need something to keep me going since finding out that my dream job basically doesn't exist.

Enter: post PhD travel planning--I'm calling it my "Islands + Iceland Adventure."

Despite all of the travel that I've done in the past 11 years with Auckland as my base, there are quite a few islands within 3-4 hour flights that I haven't explored yet:
  1. Cook Islands/Rarotonga. This one currently tops my list. I especially want to go to Aitutaki.
  2. Samoa
  3. Tonga
  4. Bora Bora. I want to stay in one of those over-water bungalows. I guess I could do this on any island, but I saw a tv show where they went there and I was enthralled.

Aitutaki, Cook Islands. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aitutaki#/media/File:Aitutaki-Motu_Tapuaetai.jpg

Advice for Raro:

South = windier, best snorkelling, best swimming

East = beautiful Muri motus for kayaking
West = good sunsets, bad for swimming. OK for snorkelling

This is where Air New Zealand flies to:
The plan would be to use up my Air NZ and Qantas airpoints to get to both Rarotonga and Aitutaki and book accommodation. I'd snorkel, swim, surf, paddleboard, and generally live in my bathing suit and live on fresh tropical fruit and drinks. Whenever I've been able to live this relaxed, outdoorsy lifestyle, I've been at my very happiest.

Over the water bungalows in Aitutaki are outrageously expensive ($1K+ per night), so I will have to make do with a normal beach hut.

Next up on my tour: Hawai'i. Even after being away for nearly 20 years, after living there for 4 years in my early 20's, it is in my blood. It is hands down the best place I've ever lived, and where I felt the most at home in my whole life. The lifestyle is perfect for calming my anxiety and making my type A personality chill out to an even balance. I still have a huge number of friends that live there and it has been way too long since I've been back to visit. I would like to explore Kaua'i, an island I didn't get to when I actually lived in Hawai'i. This trip will be about fun in the sun, too, but also about seeing loved ones and spending quality time with people I haven't seen in ages.

Then perhaps I will go to the US and see family and friends on a nice tour. Hopefully get in a family reunion whilst I'm there. I'll stay with my mom and dad and spend quality time with them, apply for jobs and set up interviews for a month or so. Then I'll be off to Iceland!

On the Iceland leg, I hope to explore the islands for 3-4 weeks by driving around the Ring Road. Lots of plans for this one! Geothermal lagoon soaking, a LOT of waterfall and lava hikes, a trip into an old volcano... Obviously I'll need to do this in the Northern Hemisphere summer months. :)

Of course, this all depends on finding people to come with me--the one down side of being single is traveling alone. Some people don't mind it but I find that I get MUCH more out of travel if I share the experience with someone else. Otherwise I may as well just sit home alone with my laptop. I think I have someone for the Iceland trip, but the other legs may be trickier.

Budget Updates

Woo hoo! Even though I found out that I am in a dead-end job that I love, I am celebrating the little wins.

My supervisor realized that the PhD salaries have increased from when I started in 2014, from $25,000 per year (tax free), to $27,900 per year (tax free). I am part time, so I was earning about $12,500 per year from my PhD (less because they messed up my first 6 months and paid me as if I were full-time...it took them many months to sort out the problem). She arranged for my PhD salary to increase to the new salary amount, or $13,950 part time, for my last year of my PhD. This nets me an extra $89 per paycheck, or about $178 per month.

From now until the end of my PhD, every two weeks, I get:

$538.21 PhD Salary
$945.49 Job Salary

Total: $1,483.80

This is an increase from $1,394.79. Previously, I was getting $449.30 from my PhD.

With this $178 increase, I have changed up my budget:

(Side note: Rent just increased to $950 per month, an increase of about $10, so that is covered by the salary increase)

I have weirdly been spending a lot more on groceries lately--I am really not sure what is going on. Am I choosing more expensive ingredients? Have prices risen? I'm unsure, but I've increased my budget to $450 from $415 to accommodate the change.

Internet/electricity rounded up to $92. Flatmates are using a lot more electricity by taking several showers a day and doing laundry/using the dryer all weekend, every weekend. They aren't cleaning the house more but maybe they are just personally super clean people?

Eating Out increased from $164 to $175. Similarly to groceries, I seem to be spending more on this as well. Just winter laziness, I guess.

Medical is rounded up to $120 from $116 and change. Just to make life easier. I have a lot of doctor's appointments coming up.

Misc increases from $450 to $500. I have been way overspending in this category, mainly due to car share expenses. Winter is not fun for walking around anywhere.

Finally, last but definitely not least, I'm banking about 28% of this 'raise' and putting it into savings. I have many new savings goals now (see side bar), so this will help get those filled.

*****************************

In other news, Boss increased my salary to $35K per year (0.5 FTE), starting in July. This is equivalent to a raise to $70K full time. Best salary I've ever had! (if only I could quit the PhD and work full time). In July, if all goes well, I can anticipate an increase in income of about $95 per paycheck.

Until my PhD is done, I won't know what is happening with my job. Might as well try to get and enjoy the salary increases along the way!

Surprise! You Spent 11 Years In A Dead End Job

Life is not going the way I was told it was going to. Sigh. Plight of the optimist? From when we are young, we are told to keep trying, keep hoping, keep attempting to get the things we want. We are told that if we want badly enough, and try hard enough, eventually something will happen. It may not be what we initially set out to get, but we'll probably end up with something, and be happy anyway.

But I call BS! Life: 2,000, me: 50? Life is definitely winning. When I say Life, I mean all the things that can go wrong, like rejection and plans.

I'm definitely depressed, and definitely Going Through Something. Don't get me wrong, I know I have been lucky to have had the life that I have had, but my future isn't looking so great. Lately I can't seem to get any wins. If I were a stock in the stock market, I would be performing below market, with a bleak forecast. Dump all of your stock in me, I'm crashing.

I had a serious talk with my boss about a week ago about my future. It turns out that the reason I am getting my PhD--to be qualified to lead the project that I've been managing for 11 years in the job that I adore--doesn't exist. There is no path forward post-PhD in my job. Why? Because they would have to pay me too much, and my project can't afford to pay a post-doc salary, and because I am actually NOT ALLOWED to lead the project unless I get hired by the University as an academic (note: this is impossible, and my boss flat out told me that it was impossible and that there are no positions anticipated to open for the next 5 years; also, I don't want to be an academic). So I have essentially been in a dead-end job for 11 years without really knowing it. I thought (and was told) that if I obtained my PhD, that future was a possibility. I've been used.

Anyway, there's more. All I can think about is how I'm 40 and:
--don't have a boyfriend/husband
--ALL of my friends are either far away and/or getting married/having babies/leveling up in their careers and don't have much time for me anymore. I spend 99% of my time alone now. The only people around that actually have time to hang out are about 25. Nothing against 25 year olds, but a) I can't keep up anymore, and b) I--understandably, I think--don't have the same interests and am not super interested in becoming best friends with 25 year olds as a 40 year old.
--My body is achy and tired all of the time. I feel old. My body truly feels worn out in a very permanent way, for the first time ever. I've suddenly gained a ton of weight even though I haven't changed how I eat or exercise in several years. I look like I'm pregnant! None of my pants fit anymore--I wear sweats 80% of the time when I used to only ever wear them in the house. The doctor says it's just age.
--I apparently have no career prospects.
--I still don't have a dog.
--My house down payment fund needs to be 4 x its size, and my salary needs to be at least 3x bigger for me to afford a house. Buying a house in Auckland by myself is an impossible goal. But again, I don't have a husband/partner and there's no one I would trust to buy a house with here.
--I don't really have anyone reliably in my life except my mom and dad, and my dad has cancer and my mom is 70 and having her own health issues. Pretty soon I'll be all alone in the world.

I am not sure what to do. Mostly because I feel like there is nothing to do. I feel like I am just going through the motions and dragging my body from chore to chore, and this will be my life for decades upon decades until I blissfully enter a nursing home and get someone else to do all the hard stuff for me.

I'm on a loop: weekdays are wake up, get ready, work, eat, work, go home, eat dinner, bathe, get ready for tomorrow, meditate, sleep. Weekends are plan next week's meals, laundry, clean house, change sheets, grocery shop, get a massage, cook for the week, take care of plants, plan doctor's appointments and life stuff, plan my work week, talk to family for an hour. I'm exhausted and any down time I do have is spent in bed watching TV, because that is the only thing I have the energy leftover for. All I am doing is keeping the fraying edges from unraveling my life altogether. I go from thread to thread, plugging holes like my life is a leaking dam about to flood the plains. I can do that forever, I think, sure, but it's just treading water...it's not getting me anywhere. I want to BE HEADED SOMEWHERE. I have a million goals, but they exist on some far away island. I can't even see the goal islands anymore! The career one sank right into the ocean. Meanwhile, all around me are people driving by in boats, or paddling or swimming away, headed to their islands with their spouses. I'm not drowning, so no one cares.

I keep telling my therapist my concerns, and she just keeps telling me to go to bed an hour earlier, like that will magically fix everything. ??? I am doing that and I just don't see how that helps at all. I just get an extra hour of sleep (9.5 instead of 8.5) in that case.

I don't know. I used to just pick myself back up and get back in the game when life knocked me back. Now, I'm TRYING to see light and hope and do all the things my optimist self used to do, but I'm burnt out and tired of always getting shut down and put back in square one again. It's too hard to get back up this time. There are only so many times you can start over again, and I've hit my limit. I give up--I don't think it is going to happen, what I need from life. What do people do in that situation? How do you maintain focus on basic things like keeping your life from falling apart further when you know it won't ever get any better?

Money Round UP! May 2019

Changes are afoot due to the Rabobank digipass fiasco (it has now been resolved). I've now moved about $2,300 to Lending Crowd, to make my investment there equal about $5K. I plan to slowly move money over as needed to invest more of it into peer lending in $50 increments.

Once I reach maybe $10K in peer to peer lending totals (e.g. 200 loans), I plan to look into Squirrel investment loans to diversify further--it seems 'safer' than Lending Crowd in terms of keeping the principal intact, and would give my lending portfolio some risk balance. I'm already way too safe with my savings, so I'm OK with some risk exposure right now.

NET WORTH:
$125,128.33 NZD
$27,553.95 USD

New Laptop ($5K NZD): $0
New Phone ($800 NZD): $0

Currently my 'Bonus Bond' fund of $160 has no 'home' in terms of my funds, above. Same for the interest I've earned off of Lending Crowd. Those two together are $322.25 right now. That needs to be accounted for somewhere! I've fixed that now.

It is also time to start saving up for new electronics--a new laptop, and a new phone. I want a Windows Surface Book or Laptop--several of my colleagues have one and they rave about it. They are about $3K USD, so about $5K NZD. We'll see how far I can get--or if work could maybe pay for it.

For my new phone, it is trickier. I can't find a phone matching what I would like: takes great photos, is about 4.3 inches (it fits in my wallet and side pockets of my backpack perfectly at that size--no wiggle room, no moving around or slipping out), android based, has an SD slot. I don't want a big phone, but they don't seem to make the small ones anymore! I hate apple and windows phones, so I want an android. I will have to keep shopping around. For now, I've slotted in $800 NZD to hopefully put toward a perfect phone. I really want to try a samsung phone because I've heard/seen that the photos are fantastic. LGs also interest me. I have a sony now and really do not like their cameras.

Anyway, those are my changes and status for my overall money situation this month. Stay tuned for my budget review!
